As an unincorporated community in Michigan, West Olive does not have defined boundaries, so it is likely that people outside of this area, including those on the east side of US-31, consider themselves to be in West Olive, as well, especially since the West Olive post office serves the northern and western parts of Olive Township, as well as most of Port Sheldon Township and the southern parts of Grand Haven and Robinson townships.

West Olive is an unincorporated community on the western boundary of Olive Township with Port Sheldon Township. It is in Ottawa County, in the lower western portion of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, not far from Lake Michigan. The Pigeon River is to the south.

West Olive is a small community with a concentrated residential area east of US-31. Its main residential area has a couple of churches and a Christian school, but few commercial businesses and no industry other than nurseries, agricultural businesses, and storage facilities.

For the purpose of categorization, we will include online resources for businesses, churches, and other entities outside of this area when they are in the surrounding region, have a West Olive postal address and are not clearly in another community.

R.M. Paget founded the community in 1870. A post office was established on November 8 of that year, with John P. Hanchett as postmaster. In 1884, West Olive became a junction point for the Chicago & Western Michigan (Pere Marquette) Railroad, off its line reaching the Consumers Energy J.H. Campbell Power Generating Facility, for which it transports coal shipments. However, the JH Campbell Power Plant is scheduled to be closed by 2040, or by 2025 if an early closure date is approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission.

As West Olive, Michigan is the focus of this portion of our web guide, online resources for governmental facilities, businesses, industries, schools, places of worship, organizations, attractions, events, entertainment venues, or recreational opportunities within the community, or a wider area utilizing the West Olive post office, are appropriate for this category.
