The origins of the church were in Episcopal services that began to be held in Wayne in 1896, resulting in an Episcopal mission named St. John's by 1901. When the church outgrew its first location, the current property was contributed to the church, and a fund was established for a new building, the cornerstone of which was laid in 1956.
