Wheeler, Michigan was founded by Albert P. Foland in 1862, and a post office was established on May 28, 1869, with Daniel D. Brooks as postmaster.

The post office was named for James B. Wheeler, a pioneer settler who had come to the township in 1859, and served as the first township supervisor. The following year, Mr. Foland became postmaster after the office was moved to his general store. When the Pere Marquette Railroad came through in 1872, Foland moved his general store a mile north to be near the railroad, and the town rose up around this location.

The railroad opened a depot at Wheeler, and later added a 68-car passing track and several side tracks.

Wheeler was platted by S.S. Hastings for Charles J. and Mary M. Allen in 1876, although it was never incorporated.

Wheeler is south of central Wheeler Township in Gratiot County, and centered on the intersection of M-46 and Wheeler Road, just east of Breckenridge. In Michigan, unincorporated communities lack defined boundaries, however.

Although the small community does not currently include many of these, appropriate resources for this portion of our guide include governmental entities, businesses, industries, churches, organizations, attractions, events, entertainment venues, and recreational opportunities within the community, as well as any other online resources focusing on Wheeler, Michigan.
