The City of Yale, the Bologna Capital of the World, is in northern St. Clair County, in the Thumb Region of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

Yale can also be considered as part of the Blue Water Area, as well.

Yale Road (Park Avenue, North Street) and Brockway Road (Main Street) intersect in the center of town, although Brockway Road turns southeast in the southern part of the city, while Main Street continues south to become Sayles Road.

Yale first appeared on a US Census roll in 1890 with a population of 937, and its peak population was 2,063 in 2000. Since then, it has declined to 1,903 in 2020.

Originally known as Brockway Centre, for the township that it was then part of, Nathan White is acknowledged as its founder, as he was one of, if not the earliest permanent settler. A post office was established on May 11, 1865, with Orrin P. Chamblin as its first postmaster, and B.R. Noble arranged for the village to be platted and recorded.

In 1889, the community was renamed Yale, in honor of Yale University. Yale was incorporated as a village in 1895, and as a city in 1905.

The Yale Woolen Mill operated from the early 1900s to 1963. Located on Mill Creek, which flows through the city, the mill originally produced several different woolen products but, from the 1920s to the 1940s, the mill focused on making products solely for the automobile industry. With the increased use of synthetics, the demand for its product declined. The company attempted to shift to making apparel, but it was too late for it to recapture that market, and it closed in 1963.

Although Yale is a fairly small city, in terms of population, it supports several commercial businesses and light industries, as well as churches and civic organizations.

The city has its own police and fire departments, and the Yale Fire Department answers EMS and rescue calls, as well as hazardous materials incidents, fire suppression services, and citizen, assists. Yale Public Schools services provide a K-12 curriculum for Yale students, as well as the surrounding area, encompassing more than hundred and fifty miles. It operates five buildings supporting four school campuses: Yale Elementary School (K-5), Avoca Elementary School (K-5), Yale Junior High School (6-8), and Yale High School (9-12).

Yale is unofficially known as the Bologna Capital of the World, largely due to its annual Yale Bologna Festival, which began in 1989. Yale bologna is sold in grocery stores throughout the area.
