Located in northeastern Minnesota, the city of Babbitt is in central-eastern Babbitt County, at the edge of the Superior National Forest. County Road 21 is the main route through the city. Nearby communities include Rothman, to the north, as well as Embarrass, Tower, and McComber. The community began as a company town formed by Armco and Republic Steel in 1944, established to house workers in its taconite mine. Built near the eastern edge of the Mesabi Iron Range, a train connected Babbitt to another company town by the name of Silver Bay, sixty miles to the southeast. The town was named for Judge Kurnal R. Babbitt, who was general counsel for several mining companies, for which he also served on the board of directors. The town had its actual beginnings in 1865 as a gold mining site on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range, near the current town site, but Old Babbitt was abandoned when investors began to show more interest in the Vermillion Range and the western end of the Mesabi.
