The city of Backus is in Cass County, Minnesota, situated on the eastern bank of Pine Mountain Lake. In the eastern part of the community are Bowen Lake, Lind Lake, and Swede Lake. A post office was established in Backus in 1896, and the community was named for Edward Wellington Backus, owner of the E.W. Backus Company, once the second largest lumber company in the state. Minnesota Highways 87 and 371 provide access to the city. Nearby communities include Badoura, Chamberlain, Chickamaw Beach, Hackensack, Oshawa, and Wabeda. Grand Rapids, Minnesota is just under eighty miles northeast of Backus.
