Barrett, in Grant County, Minnesota, was platted in 1887 and named for General Theodore Harvey Barrett, a Minnesota resident who commanded the Union forces in the last battle of the American Civil War. A post office was established in Barrett in 1887, and the city was incorporated in 1889. The city wraps around the southwestern side of Barrett Lake, formed by the Pomme de Terre River. Elbow Lake, Minnesota is about eight miles northwest of Barrett, along US Highway 59. Other nearby communities include Brandon, Erdahl, Evansville, Herman, Hoffman, Norcross, and Wendell.
