Located in central-northern Minnesota, the city of Blackduck is in Beltrami County. US Highway 71 runs northeast-southwest through the city, while Minnesota Highway 72 runs north-south. Nearby communities include Alvwood, Bergville, Funkley, Hines, Langor, Nebish, Orth, Puposki, Rosy, Tenstrike, Turtle River. Blackduck is north of the Chippewa National Forest. Bemidji, Minnesota is twenty-five miles southwest, Red Lake is thirty-two miles northwest, and Grand Rapids is sixty-five miles southeast of Blackduck. The village of Blackduck was formed in 1900, and incorporated as a town a few months later, named for Blackduck Lake, which was the location of the original town center. The first church in the area was the First Presbyterian Church, established during the summer of 1900. In 1929, the town first received full-time electric service, replacing the dusk-to-dawn, two and a half days a week service that had preceded it. The economy of the town was based largely on the logging and forest industry, as the Continental Divide is nearby, providing good drainage. Today, the town depends a great deal on nearby resorts and outdoor recreation. Its population has remained relatively stable since its peak population in 1910.
