Breckenridge is the county seat of Wilkin County, in central western Minnesota, across the Red River from Wahpeton, North Dakota. The Bois de Sioux River and the Otter Tail River join at Breckenridge and Wahpeton to form the Red River of the North. US Route 75 and Minnesota Highways 9 and 210 are the chief routes serving the communities. Other nearby communities include Dwight, Farmington, Galchutt, Great Bend, and Mooreton, North Dakota, as well as Brushvale, Doran, Foxhome, and Everdell, Minnesota. Breckenridge was platted in 1857, and named for John C. Breckenridge, who was Vice President of the United States. A post office was established at Breckenridge in 1857, and the city was incorporated in 1908. The city’s population has decreased slightly each census year since reaching its peak population of 4,335 in 1960.
