Located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, on the northwest border of Minneapolis, Brooklyn Center is in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Brooklyn Center is across the Mississippi River from Fridley. Other nearby communities include Columbia Heights, Crystal, Hilltop, New Hope, and Robbinsdale. An inner-ring suburb of the Twin Cities, Brooklyn Center was formed as the center of local trade in the former Brooklyn Township in 1873, and incorporated as a village in 1911 in order to avoid annexation from Minneapolis, and incorporating as a city in 1966. Caribou Coffee moved its headquarters to Brooklyn Center in 2004. The city is also home to Surly Brewing Company and the Global Operations Center of MoneyGram.
