The first flour mill was constructed by R.C. Knox and Company in 1957, and a wool mill, grist mill, and a mill producing syrup from amber cane all used power generated from the Little Cannon River beginning in 1861. Just west of town, Lake Byllesby is a reservoir of the Cannon River. US Highway 52 and Minnesota Highways 19 and 20 are the main routes through the city. Cannon Falls is on the edge of the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest.
