Cannon Falls is a city, a village, and a township in Goodhue County, Minnesota. The first settler in what became the city of Cannon Falls was Edway Stoughton, while Charles Parks moved onto the land that is now the village of Cannon Falls in 1854, which was laid out by Richard and William Freeborn and platted in 1855, and incorporated in 1857. A post office was established in 1855 as Cannon River Falls, but it was shortened to Cannon Falls in 1889. The city of Cannon Falls was incorporated in 1905. Cannon Falls was named for a falls along the Cannon River, and it was the abundance of water power from the Cannon River and the Little Cannon River that attracted manufacturers to the area, stirring growth. The first flour mill was constructed by R.C. Knox and Company in 1957, and a wool mill, grist mill, and a mill producing syrup from amber cane all used power generated from the Little Cannon River beginning in 1861. Just west of town, Lake Byllesby is a reservoir of the Cannon River. US Highway 52 and Minnesota Highways 19 and 20 are the main routes through the city. Cannon Falls is on the edge of the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest. Nearby communities include Belle Creek, Castle Rock, Claybank, Dennison, Dundas, Goodhue, Hampton, Miesville, Northfield, Randolph, Ryan, Sogn, Stanton, Vasa, Wastedo, Waterford, and Welch. Red Wing is about twenty miles east-northeast, Apple Valley is thirty miles northwest, and Faribault is thirty miles southwest of Cannon Falls.
