Named for the plant, the city of Comfrey is in both Brown County and Cottonwood County, although the majority of its population resides in Brown County. The town was platted in 1902, and has retained a small but fairly steady population since the 1910 census, with a peak population of 642 in 1950. Nearby communities include Darfur, Delft, Dotson, Godahl, Jeffers, Lamberton, Leavenworth, Sanborn, and Springfield. Mankato is about fifty miles east, Minneapolis is about one hundred and thirty miles northeast, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota is one hundred and fifteen miles west-southwest of Comfrey.
