Courtland, Minnesota is in central-western Nicollet County, in the southern part of the state. US Highway 14 runs through the center of town, and the Minnesota River flows through the southern portion of the city. Cambria is just south of Courtland, across the river, New Ulm is northwest, and Nicollet is east of Courtland, while the small community of Searles is southwest. Platted in 1882, the city was named for Courtland County, New York. The first settlers in the area came in 1855, and the village of Red Stone, near the ferry, was surveyed but never developed. A post office was established in 1856, and named Hilo. In 1858, a Hilo township and village were surveyed, adopted its current name seven years later. In 1862, nine local residents were killed during the Sioux uprising.
