The city of Cromwell, Minnesota is situated along Minnesota Highways 73 and 210 in Carlton County, and on the western edge of the Fond du Lac State Forest. Wright and Tamarack are west of Cromwell along Highway 210, while Sawyer and Iverson are east. Kettle River is south along Highway 73, and Floodwood is north. Other nearby communities include Atkinson, Balsam and Mahtowa. Cloquet is twenty-two miles east, Duluth is forty miles east-northeast, and Moose Lake is twenty-two miles south. The community began as a railroad stop for the Northern Pacific Railway. A post office was established there in 1882, and the town was founded in 1891, incorporating as a city in 1903. With pluses and minuses, the small city’s population has remained relatively stable since 1910.
