The city of Dawson is in Lac qui Parle County, in lower west Minnesota. The West Branch of the Lac qui Parle River flows through the city, emptying into the river just south of town. US Highway 212 serves as the main route through the city. Nearby communities include Cerro Gordo, Clarkfield, Haydenville, Lac qui Parle, Madison, Providence, and Watson. Granite Falls, Minnesota is about thirty miles east-southeast, and Watertown, South Dakota is fifty-five miles west of the city. Dawson was platted as a railroad town in 1884, serving the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad, and named for William Dawson, one of three partners of the Dawson Townsite Company. A post office was established in Dawson in 1884, and the city was incorporated as a village in 1884, and as a city in 1911. Theodore Christianson, the 21st governor of Minnesota, was a resident of Dawson and publisher of the Dawson Sentinel.
