The City of Deephaven is situated on the shores of Lake Minnetonka, in western Hennepin County, about sixteen miles southwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Other nearby communities include Greenwood, Hopkins, Wayzata, and Woodland. Known as Big Waters by Native Americans, Lake Minnetonka was not discovered by European-Americans until the 1820s. Named for its harbor on Lake Minnetonka, Big Harbor grew up around its tourism industry, as the Lake Minnetonka area soon became a popular recreation area, accessed by the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad. By 1900, When Deephaven was incorporated as a village, there were only about two hundred homes, its residents largely dependent upon tourism. By the 1920s, the community had shifted from tourism to a more peaceful, secluded town atmosphere, and as a suburb of Minneapolis.
