Deer River, Minnesota was settled as a lumber camp in the late 1800s, and platted in 1898. Built in 1904, the Itasca Lumber Company’s Superintendent’s House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A logging camp manned by German prisoners of war was located at the site of an old CCC camp near Deer River during World War II. US Highway 2 and Minnesota Highways 6 and 46 and the chief routes to and from the city. Deer River is situated just north of Zemple, and on the edge of the Chippewa National Forest and the Leech Lake Indian Reservation. Due to its location near several lakes and other bodies of water, the area has become a popular outdoor resort destination. Other nearby communities include Ball Club, Cohasset, Grand Rapids, and Suomi. Bemidji is about fifty miles west of Deer River, on the other side of the national forest.
