Dodge Center is situated in the center of Dodge County, Minnesota, but it is not the county seat. Located along US Highway 14, the city is east of Claremont and west of Kasson. Other nearby communities include Bixby, Byron, Concord, Havana, Hayfield, Mantorville, Rice Lake, Rock Dell, Salem Corners, Vernon, Wasioja, and West Concord. Owatonna is about twenty-five miles west of Dodge Center. The area was settled as a railroad town in the 1850s, when the Chicago and North Western Railroad came through, and named for Dodge County, which was itself named for Henry Dodge, the governor of Wisconsin. Dodge Center was platted in 1867, and was incorporated in 1872. Its early economy was based on agriculture, grain being the primary crop. At one time, two grain elevators were in operation. The Minnesota and Northwestern Railroad came to Dodge Center in 1885, becoming the Chicago Great Western in 1892. The subject of the 1973 book, Sybil, by Flora Rheta Schreiber, was a graduate of the Dodge Center High School Class of 1941.
