Situated along the Rock River in Pipestone County, the city of Edgerton, Minnesota was platted in 1879 and named for Alonzo J. Edgerton, Brigadier General during the Civil War and a Minnesota state senator. The first European-Americans who settled in the area were Alonzo Kingsbury, A.A. Dodge, and M.M. Gunsolus, who laid claims in the region in 1876, although they didn’t actually move there until 1877. The Southern Minnesota Railroad constructed its tracks to Edgerton in 1879, and post office was established in Edgerton that year, and the city was incorporated in 1887. The city’s population has remained relatively stable since 1960, with minor fluctuations. Nearby communities include Leota, to the southeast, and Trotsky, to the west. Sioux Falls, South Dakota is about fifty miles southwest of Edgerton.
