The city of Edina, Minnesota is a suburb southwest of Minneapolis, in Hennepin County. The community began as a farming community, and was originally part of Richfield Township. By the 1870s, seventeen families, mostly Irish immigrants, had claimed land in the southwestern part of the township. Soon afterward, settlers from Germany and New England claimed additional land near Minnehaha Creek, areas that are now known as the Baird and Grimes neighborhoods, as well as the Country Club District, in northeastern Edina. Another early settlement was the Cahill Settlement at West 70th Street and Cahill Road. In 1888, the area separated from the township, naming it for the Edina Mill. In the early 1900s, a suburban neighborhood in northeastern Edina seceded from the city and became a separate village, named Morningside. In 1966, Morningside became once again part of Edina. John Denver lived in Edina from 1968 to 1971, before moving to Colorado. Nearby communities include Atwood, Barden, Bloomington, Bloomington Ferry, Eden Prairie, Glen Lake, Hopkins, Richfield, Rowland, St. Louis Park, and Savage.
