Eveleth is located near the center of Saint Louis County, in northeastern Minnesota. Eveleth is part of what is known as the Quad Cities of Virginia, Gilbert, Mountain Iron, and Eveleth. The community was platted in 1893, and incorporated as a village in 1894, named for Erwin Eveleth, a timber company employee. The original village was about one mile southwest of its current location, on land that was part of the Adams-Spruce Mine, now in the area of Douglas Avenue between Jones Street and Monroe Street. In 1895, iron ore was discovered beneath the village site, and the village was moved to its current location in 1900, and incorporated as a city in 1913. Over the years, Eveleth annexed parts of Fayal Township, the communities of Alice Mine, Fayal, and Genoa. Eveleth is situated in the Mesabi Range, and the Thunderbird Mine is located within the city limits. The city of Eveleth has produced several professional hockey players, and the United States Hockey Hall of Fame is located within the city. Apart from Virginia, Gilbert, and Mountain Iron, other nearby communities include Aurora, Biwabik, Cherry, Forbes, Grant, Iron Junction, Kinney, Leonidas, Makinen, McKinley, and Palo. Chisholm is just over twenty miles west of Eveleth.
