Situated in southeastern Minnesota, the city of Eyota is in Olmsted County. The city was platted in 1864, the year a post office was established there, after the Winona & St. Peter Railroad extended its tracks to the area. The railroad became an important employer for the city, as daily trains to Chatfield and Plainview stopped in Eyota. The railroad was later acquired by there Chicago & North Western Railway. Prior to the coming of the railroad, there was some white settlement of the area as early as 1854, an early settler being Benjamin Bear, for whom Bear Creek was named. Charles P. Russell established a store on the corner of South Front Street and Center Avenue in 1865. The city was incorporated in 1875. Eyota is situated at the intersection of US Highway 14 and Minnesota Highway 42, just north of Interstate Highway 90. Along Highway 14, Eyota is east of Chester and west of Dover.
