Farmington, Minnesota is in Dakota County. Situated in the Twin Cities metropolitan region, the area began to be settled in the early 1850s. The village of Dakota City was formed around the intersection of the Minnesota Central, Hastings, and Dakota railroads, as well as the Vermillion River. The train station became known as Farmington Station and, before long, people began confusing the railroad station with the town that grew up around it, and calling both of them Farmington. Eventually, the town's name was changed to Farmington, which was chartered as a village in 1872. Although the Dakota County seat is in Hastings, the Dakota County Fair was moved to Farmington in 1869, and has remained there ever since. Today, although Farmington has developed several suburban neighborhoods, the city is separated to the west by farm land, although housing development are gradually encroaching on agricultural land. To the north, it is separated by Lakeville. Other nearby communities include Empire, Eureka Center, Hampton, and Rosemount. Minneapolis and St. Paul are about thirty miles north of Farmington.
