Fertile, Minnesota is in southern Polk County. Although the county seat is in Crookston, the annual Polk County Fair has been held in Fertile since 1900. A post office was established in Fertile in 1881, and the community was named for Fertile, Iowa, the former home of most of the town’s early settlers. Its land is sandy, and poor farming land, although some crops could be grown east and west of the town. The first settlers to come to the area were Knute Nelson and his brother, Einar Nelson, who came with their uncle, Lars A. Bolstad, in 1879. Fertile was platted in 1887, as the railroad was constructed to the area. The first building constructed in town was a store built for John LaDue, and a hotel and law office were soon to follow. Fertile was incorporated as a village in 1888. Nearby communities include Beltrami, Flaming, Greenview, Lockhart, Maple Bay, Melvin, Ranum, Rindal, Sundal, and Winger. Crookston is about twenty-three miles northwest of Fertile.
