The city of Fountain is the western gateway to the Root River State Trail, in Fillmore County, in southeastern Minnesota. The small city is situated at the intersection of US Highway 52 with Minnesota Highways 8, 11 and 80. Nearby communities include Carimona, Fillmore, Lanesboro, Preston, and Wykoff. Rochester is about thirty miles northwest of Fountain. The community was settled in 1853 and organized in 1858, named for a large fountain spring that was in section 4 of the village. The town was platted in 1870 after the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad extended its tracks to the area, and it was incorporated in 1876. A post office has been in operation there since 1870.
