Glencoe, Minnesota is the seat of government for McLeod County. The area was settled in the mid-1850s when pioneers broke a trail through the “Big Woods” and came across a clearing, upon which they settled. The town was laid out by John Harrington Stevens in 1855, and named for Glen Coe, in Scotland. A post office was established there in 1856, and Glencoe was incorporated as a city in 1909. From the beginning of the county, Glencoe has always been its county seat. When the Hastings and Dakota Railway extended its tracks to the village in 1872, followed by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, the small village became a regional trade center. Situated just outside the city, Glencoe Township was also founded in 1855, and named for the village. The city’s population has increased each census yeare since 1920, and has only decreased once since the first census was taken in 1880, and then by just over two percent. Today, Glencoe is served by US Highway 212 and Minnesota Highway 22. Nearby communities include Biscay, Plato, and Sumter. Minneapolis is about fifty-five miles east-northeast of Glencoe.
