The city of Granite Falls, Minnesota is primarily in Medicine County, for which it serves as the county seat, although portions of the city spill over into Chippewa County and Renville County. The primary routes through the city are US Highway 212 and Minnesota Highways 23 and 67. The Upper Sioux Indian Reservation is just south of Granite Falls. Nearby communities include Asbury, Boyd, Bunde, Clarkfield, Hanley Falls, Hazel Run, Maynard, Sacred Heart, Spring Creek, and Wegdahl. Marshall is about thirty miles southwest, and Willmar is about thirty-five miles northeast of Granite Falls. The city was platted in 1872, and named for the granite deposits that were common in the area. Granite Falls was incorporated as a city in 1889.
