Janesville Township was organized in 1856, and named for the village. In 1869, the Winona and St. Peter Railroad extended a track east of Janesville, and it wasn’t long before nearly all of the buildings from the original townsite were moved to be in proximity of the railroad, and this new village site became known as East Janesville. In 1870, the new village was incorporated as Janesville, while the original townsite became known as Old Janesville. The city has increased in population each census year since 1960.
