The city of Kiester is in southeastern Faribault County, in central-southern Minnesota. The chief routes through the city are Minnesota Highway 22 and County Highway 2. Nearby communities include Bricelyn and Mansfield, and the Iowa state line is just south of Kiester. Before the town was founded, people have been visiting the Kiester Hills of the Algona Glacial Moraine, with an elevation of 1,432 feet, an early settlement southeast of the current site of Kiester was known as Kveit’s Pit. Kiester Township, the City of Kiester, and the hills were named for Judge J.A. Kiester, a prominent county resident. The first settlers in the area were spread out throughout Kiester Township, the first to file a land claim being Eli and A.W. Judd, who came in 1865 and filed on land that included the southwestern portion of the current city. Kiester Township was organized in 1872. A post office was established in 1882. When the Iowa, Minnesota and North Western Railroad came into the region in 1899, it planted a lot of villages along its tracks, including the city of Kiester. By 1900, the city and township had a population of 896, and included several general stores, a bank, hardware store, implement store, railroad depot, two blacksmith shops, a dray line, livestock dealership, and newspaper. With a peak population of 741 in 1960, the city’s population has declined each census year.
