Concentrated along the eastern banks of the Mississippi River and the shores of Pickerel Lake, Lilydale, Minnesota is a small city in Dakota County. Interstate Highway 35-E and Minnesota Highway 13 are the chief route through the city, which serves as a suburb of the Twin Cities. Lilydale is adjacent to Mendota and Mendota Heights to the south, West St. Paul to the east, St. Paul to the north, and Minneapolis to the west. Lilydale was established on the Mississippi River flats in 1886 but, after being flooded out several times, people began rebuilding on the top of the bluff. Incorporated as a village in 1901, the village became a city in 1951. Originally a gravel pit and farm land, Lilydale has become a residential community of town homes, condominiums and apartment buildings, while the area that lies at the foot of the bluffs now includes parks and trails, including Lilydale Regional Park and the Big Rivers Regional Trail. Since Lilydale was incorporated as a city, its population has never declined.
