Officially spelled Lindström, the city of Lindstrom is in Chisago County, in center-eastern Minnesota. Accessed primarily through US Highway 8, Lindstrom is about ten miles from the Wisconsin border. The city is nearly surrounded by lakes, including North Lindstrom Lake, South Lindstrom Lake, North Center Lake, South Center Lake, Sunrise Lake, Chisago Lake, Kroon Lake, Linn Lake, and Wallmark Lake. Chisago City is adjacent to Lindstrom on the southwest, and Center City is to the northeast. Other nearby communities include Franconia, Shafer, Stacy, the Village of Osceola, and Wyoming. In 1853, Daniel Lindström came to America from Sweden. He came to Minnesota with other Swedish immigrants, and Lindström was platted in 1880, and incorporated in 1894. One of the people who came with Daniel was Erik Norelius, whose journals formed the basisfor Vilhelm Moberg’s novels of the Swedish immigration, entitled The Emigrants. The community was settled primarily by Swedish immigrants, and still celebrates Karl Oskar Days, for one of the two main characters in the novel. In 2015, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton signed an executive order restoring the umlauts over the “o” in the name of the city, and on the city limits sign, so that it’s official name is Lindström rather than Lindstrom. Beginning with a population of 395 in 1900, the population of Lindström has not been reduced in any census year, its population being more than four thousand in 2010.
