The city of Long Prairie is the county seat of Todd County, Minnesota. The Long Prairie River flows through the city, and Lake Charlotte is at the southern part of the city. The chief routes in the city are US Highway 71 and Minnesota Highways 27 and 267. Round Prairie is south of Long Prairie, Gutches Grove is southwest, Clotho is northwest, and Pillsbury is southeast. Osakis is about twenty miles southwest and Little Falls is twenty-five miles east. When Todd County was first established by the Minnesota Territorial legislature in 1856, it extended east to the Mississippi River. When Minnesota became a state in 1858, the area of the county was reduced. As early as 1845, Long Prairie was the site of the Winnebago Indian Agency, and the town was platted in 1867. In 1871, John P. Tweed, a Long Prairie Land Company trustee, gave a block of land to Todd County for the purpose of housing county buildings. A courthouse was built in 1883, and its first jail was built in 1900, and used until 1995.
