The city of Mapleton, Minnesota is in Blue Earth County, in the central-southern part of the state. The main routes through the city are by Minnesota Highways 22 and 30. Mapleton is south of Beauford, east-northeast of Sterling Center and Amboy, and northwest of Minnesota Lake. Other nearby localities include Alma City, Garden City, Good Thunder, Nashville Center, Pemberton, Vernon Center, Waldorf, and Willow Creek. Mankato is about eighteen miles north of Mapleton. The land was first settled in 1856, and named Sherman in 1858, for Isaac Sherman, an early settler of Danville. A town government was platted by the Minnesota Settlement Association in 1861, at which time it took its present name for the Maple River. Due to the Civil War, the town’s organization was never completed, and it was superseded by a new townsite platted in 1871 when the Southern Minnesota Railroad was extended to that point, and incorporated in 1878. Its original post office, begun in 1857, was called Mapleton, Old Mapleton, Hawkins, and then Mapleton Station, when it was reestablished as part of Mapleton. Other than a 19.7% drop in its population at the time of the 1910 census, the city’s population has increased each census year.
