Wright, the village’s first settler. A portion of the current city of Montrose was founded on his land. Prior to that time, the community was known as the Virginia Settlement. Most of the town’s early businesses were concentrated on Railroad Street, but the 1930s saw the business district move outward to US Highway 12, which was built in the 1920s, after a fire destroyed many of the buildings on Railroad Street. The city’s population remained below four hundred until 1980 when it approached eight hundred, and has gained in population every year since.
