Morton, Minnesota is in lower Renville County. US Route 71 and Minnesota Highway 19 are the chief routes through the city. The city is home to the administrative headquarters of the Lower Sioux Indian Reservation, and the Morton Indian Reservation is nearby. Morton's nearest neighbor is Beaver Falls to the northwest. Other nearby communities include Franklin, North Redwood, and Redwood Falls. Just north of Morton is the site of the Birch Coulee Battlefield, one of the hardest fought battles of the US-Dakota War. The city of Morton was platted in 1882, and incorporated as a village in 1887. The population of Morton has been in a decline since its peak population of 904 in 1940, to a population of just over 400 in 2010.
