New Richland is in Waseca County, in south-central Minnesota. Minnesota Highways 13 and 30 are the chief routes through the city. Nearby communities include Bath, Ellendale, Hartland, Hope, Lemond, Matawan, Otisco, Waldorf, and Wilton. Albert Lea is about twenty miles south, Owatonna is twenty-eight miles northeast, and Mankato is about forty-two miles northwest of New Richland. The city of New Richland was founded when the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad reached the area in 1877, but New Richland Township was organized in 1858, and named for Richland County in Wisconsin, which was the former home of some of its early settlers. Both the city and the township still exist as separate political entities, and topics related to either are appropriate for this category. The area is largely rural and agricultural.
