Services and industries in the city of South Saint Paul, Minnesota are the focus of this guide.
Like many other Minnesota towns, in the early years of South Saint Paul, when it was still known as Kamposia, its major industries were agricultural in nature.
In the late 1800s, Alpheus Beede Stickney, founder of the Chicago Great Western Railway, entered into a venture in which cattle would be transported to markets in Chicago by rail rather than overland, and he chose South Saint Paul (then known as West Saint Paul) as the site in which the cattle could be fed, watered, and fattened up before moving on the Chicago.
To advance this plan, he extended his tracks, merging with smaller lines along the way to Illinois, and hired workers to move tons of dirt from the sides of the river bluffs to raise the level of the riverfront to create one of the largest stockyards in the world. The Saint Paul Union Stockyards Company was incorporated in 1886.
This brought, not only workers to fill the needs of the new enterprise for labor, but also brick storefronts and wood boardinghouses, cattle brokers and real estate investors. Success attracted major manufacturing firms to the area. These included Dwane Iron Works, Holland and Thompson Manufacturing Company, Warner and Hough Machine Company, and Waterous Engine Works Company.
The stockyards led to thriving meatpacking industry that lasted until 1915, but in the meantime several other industries had come to fill the gap.
