While situated in the Twin Cities metropolitan region, the city of Sunfish Lake, Minnesota is a largely rural population of just over five hundred.
Sunfish Lake borders on the cities of West Saint Paul to the north, Mendota Heights to the west, and Inver Grove Heights to the south, east, and northeast. Minnesota State Highway 62 marks the city's border to the north, State Highway 3 (S Robert Trail) to the east, and Delaware Avenue to the west, while 60th Street forms part of the city's southern border. Interstate Highway 494 cuts through the southeast part of the city, joining with State Highway 62 just east of Sunfish Lake.
Sunfish Lake is named for the lake by that name, which is situated entirely within the city's borders. Horseshoe Lake and a portion of Hornbean Lake are also located within the city, along with some other smaller bodies of water.
With the exception of four churches, Sunfish Lake is zoned single-family residential, with no commercial development. In the furtherance of its goal to retain a rural atmosphere, new home construction requires a minimum lot size of 2.5 acres. Most of the city is wooded.
There are no city employees, and the only property owned by the city is a parcel that was donated for a city hall, which was never built, and Harmon Park, which is undeveloped. There are no direct city services. The city contracts with neighboring cities for police and fire protection, and roads are maintained by private contractors.
Situated in Dakota County, Sunfish Lake was incorporated as a village in 1958, and became a city in the early 1970s when the Minnesota State Legislature made cities of all incorporated municipalities. Today, Sunfish Lake is one of the wealthiest towns in the United States.
