The first hospital in Thief River Falls was Thief River Bethany Hospital, which was organized in 1903. It had eight beds, and Inga Boen was both the superintendent and the entire nursing staff. Three River Falls Physicians Hospital opened in 1915, with twenty-five beds and an operating room. Physicians Hospital became Thief River Falls Mercy Hospital in 1938. An addition was built onto the hospital to accommodate twenty beds, and the hospital's second floor became a Masonic Hall in 1954. Three River Falls Saint Luke's Hospital opened in 1932, and an addition was built in 1954. Saint Luke's became Northwestern Hospital and is currently known as Northwest Medical Center.

Thief River Falls Oakland Park Sanatorium, built in 1916, served as a tuberculosis sanatorium for Pennington, Marshall, Roseau, and Red Lake counties. In 1954, the building was remodeled to accommodate nursing home patients. It closed in 1972, serving as a dormitory for community college students for a while, but was demolished in 1999.
