Wanamingo is a small town in Goodhue County, in southeastern Minnesota, about halfway between the Twin Cities and Rochester.

Nearby cities include Zumbrota (7.4 miles east), Kenyon (11.0 miles west), Pine Island (12.8 miles southeast), Cannon Falls (17.2 miles north-northwest), and West Concord (17.4 miles south-southwest).

With a population of just over a thousand, Wanamingo is largely rural and agricultural, with a mix of industry and commerce. A volunteer fire and rescue department provides fire suppression and emergency medical services, and the city contracts with the Goodhue County Sheriff's Department for police protection.
Wanamingo Township was settled in 1854 and organized in 1858. The North Fork of the Zumbro River flows through the township before entering the city limits, and the streams in the northeast valleys of the township flow into the Little Cannon River.
The city and township were settled primarily by Norwegian farmers.
The city was platted in 1907 and incorporated as a village in 1917, becoming a city in the 1970s when the Minnesota State Legislature made cities of all incorporated municipalities within the state. The first building in Wanamingo was constructed in 1855, and the Chicago, Milwaukee, Saint Paul, and Pacific Railroad established a station at Wanamingo.
A post office opened in 1857. Early businesses and industry included Farmers State Bank, Farmers Elevator, Wanamingo Elevator, and Minneola Creamery. POET, a biofuel company that now operates twenty-seven ethanol plants in the Midwest, was established on a farm near Wanamingo.
