There are several scenic parks in and around Winona, including Prairie Island Park and Lasch Island, both of which are within the city and along the river. Abutting the northern section of the city, as its west border, is the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge, a portion of which is in the city limits, and just across the river, on the Wisconsin side, is the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge.

Constructed in 1886, the Victorian home was originally built for Thomas Wilson, a local judge. Later, the Alexander family lived in the home for more than fifty years. Carriage House Bed & Breakfast
Established as a B&B in 1986, the Carriage House is the oldest single-owner bed and breakfast in Minnesota. Built in 1870, the building is located in the center of the city of Winona, between the bluffs and the river. Offering six guest lodging facilities, a formal dining room, three porches, and a garden, as well as wedding and special event spaces, the B&B is depicted in several photographs. Built for Samuel and Maude Prentiss in 1900, the Colonial Revival style structure was next owned by the Olsen family, then Prentiss’ daughter, Frances Lucas. After a period in which the building served as a lodge for college students, the McQueens acquired the building, raising a family there and then turning it into a bed and breakfast.
