Amory, Mississippi, in Monroe County, was the first planned city in the state. Needing a midpoint station between Memphis, Tennessee and Birmingham, Alabama, officials of the Kansas City, Memphis & Birmingham Railroad platted the town in 1887. People from nearby Cotton Gin Port, along the Tombigbee River, abandoned their town and moved to Amory to be nearer the railroad. Rail service continues to be a boon to the city's economy. Amory is situated near the center of the county and, although it is not the county seat, several county government offices are in Amory. Nearby communities include Becker, Hatley, New Wren, Parham, Quincy, and Smithville. Aberdeen, the county seat, is about sixteen miles south of Amory.
