Bay Springs, in southwestern Jasper County, Mississippi, was settled in the 1880s by Joe Blankenship, who built and operated a sawmill which was to become the base of the town’s early economy. At the turn of the century, Blankenship’s son-in-law, L.L. Denson, created the Denson Trading Company, which platted the town and sold lots. The town was incorporated about twenty years later, after the railroad extended its track to the area. The town was probably named for an artesian spring that flowed from the trunk of a bay tree at the place where the city gazebo now is. The city became the second seat of government for Jasper County, the first being Paulding, on the eastern side of the county. Surrounding communities include Acme, Lake Como, Louin, Stringer, Sylvarena, and Turnerville. Meridian is about fifty miles to the northeast, and Jackson is about sixty-four miles to the northwest of Bay Springs.
