Named for an early resident, Mrs. Hal Green, whose maiden name was Benton, Bentonia was founded along the Illinois Central Railway. The Yazoo County, Mississippi town is the home of the Bentonia School of Blues singing and guitar playing, said to be a distinct style of Delta Blues, although the town is outside of the Mississippi Delta. Bentonia was the hometown of Henry Stuckey, the founder of Bentonia Blues, and his two most famous students, Skip James and Jack Owens. Bentonia is south of Anding, southeast of Oil City, and north of Vernon.
