Diamondhead, in southeastern Hancock County, southern Mississippi, was a census-designated place until 2012, when it was incorporated as a city. The move for incorporation began in 2009, when a petition supported by the Property Owners Association was filed. Opponents of incorporation argued that the incorporation requirements were not complied with, appealing the matter to the Mississippi Supreme Courts, which upheld the lower court decision in favor of incorporation, allowing it to go forward. The city is named for Diamond Head, Hawaii, a theme that is carried through to the naming of most of the city’s roads. as well as the design of its community centers and many of the private homes in the city. Originally, the housing development was designed as a retirement community, although a variety of age groups now reside within the city, including young families. Situated along the St. Louis Bay of the Gulf of Mexico, Diamondhead was severely impacted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Nearly all of two hundred homes facing the water on the south side of the community were destroyed, although the north side of Diamondhead fared much better. Diamondhead is accessed through Interstate Highway 10. Catahoula Creek flows into the bay to the west of Diamondhead, while Rotten Bayou flows on the west, northwest, and north side of the city. The cities of Bay St. Louis and Waveland are south of Diamondhead and Kiln is to the northwest.
