Durant, in Holmes County, Mississippi, began as a station on the Mississippi Central Railroad in 1858. The city was named for Louis Durant, a Choctaw chief who had lived on a bluff just across the Big Black River before the forced removal of Indians from the area. Prior to the Civil War, the area was known as the “dark corner of the county” for the large numbers of enslaved African-Americans who worked the cotton plantations there. US Highway 51 and Missouri Highway 12 intersect in Durant, and Interstate Highway 56 is just west of the city. Nearby communities include Bowling Green, Boyette, Goodman, Hoffman, Lexington, Owens Wells, Possumneck, Sallis, West, and West Hill. Jackson, Mississippi is about sixty-five miles south of Durant.
