The small town of Fayette, Mississippi is located in the center of Jefferson County, serving as its county seat. In 1879, the Jesse James gang raided southwestern Missouri, robbing a store in Fayette. In 1969, James Charles Evers, an American Civil Rights activist, was elected mayor of Fayette, the first African-American mayor elected in Mississippi since Reconstruction. Fayette is situated along US Highway 61, northeast of Cadillac and Stampley, north of McNair, and southwest of Stonington.
