The small town of Fayette, Mississippi is located in the center of Jefferson County, serving as its county seat. In 1879, the Jesse James gang raided southwestern Missouri, robbing a store in Fayette. In 1969, James Charles Evers, an American Civil Rights activist, was elected mayor of Fayette, the first African-American mayor elected in Mississippi since Reconstruction. Fayette is situated along US Highway 61, northeast of Cadillac and Stampley, north of McNair, and southwest of Stonington. Jackson, Mississippi is about seventy-five miles to the northeast, and Vicksburg is about fifty miles north of Fayette.
