The city of Grenada, Mississippi is the county seat of Grenada County. It was founded by Franklin Plummer and Hiram Runnels in 1836, after the removal of the Native Americans who had lived in the area for generations. Cotton was the primary crop in the region, and plantation owners depended upon enslaved Africans for labor. During the American Civil Rights movement, Congress passed laws in 1964 outlawing segregation of of public facilities and in 1965 protecting voting rights. In 1966, African-American James Meredith began a solo march to demonstrate against the oppression in Mississippi. Planning to walk from Memphis, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi, he was shot on the second day. Prominent activists, including Martin Luther King, and Dick Gregory, met in Grenada where they demonstrated for about a week there.
