Inverness, Mississippi is a small town in Sunflower County, about ninety miles north of Jackson. Nearby communities include Baird, Berclair, Bowles, Caile, Four Mile, Heathman, Indianola, Isola, Markham, Moorhead, Nichols, Old Dominion, Peteet, Purnell, and Swiftown. Greenwood is about thirty miles to the northeast. On February 21, 1971, a tornado struck Inverness, destroying a hundred and fifty buildings, killing twenty-one residents, and injuring more than two hundred.
