The town of Maben, Mississippi is primarily in northwestern Oktibbeha County, although the western portion of the community extends into Webster County. Originally known as Goodwater, a post office was established there in 1888, and the town’s name was changed to Maben in 1889, before it was incorporated in 1890. Maben prospered largely as a trading place for area farmers, particularly after the railroad came through in 1905. A boarding school known as Maben Public School and Training College was established in Maben in 1890. The town of Mathiston is adjacent to Maben on the southwest. Other nearby communities include Adaton, Cedar Bluff, Clarkson, Cumberland, Eupora, and Sherwood. Starkville, Mississippi is about nineteen miles southeast of Maben.
